Welcome to EckArt, a window into Susan Eckles' art studio.

After a career in education Susan has spent the past 15 years painting and sculpting. Susan summarisies her inspiration:

“On retirement I came to Devon knowing that I would be stimulated by the beautiful landscape. What I hadn’t anticipated was the inspiration and encouragement that I have received from the many local artists with whom I have been fortunate to meet.

I am so grateful to Claire Smith who first encouraged me to pick up a paintbrush, had me marching across Dartmoor with an artist’s backpack and organised challenging and rewarding courses at home and abroad.

Kari McGowan has been a constant, talented teacher who has shown me the wonders of watercolour and instilled a spirit of adventure and exploration.

Lucianne Lassalle a brilliant sculptor, who has been friend and tutor and has encouraged my venture into more abstract forms.

Janey Leitch has gathered together a small group of painters at Gidleigh who meet regularly and draw on her expertise and thrive on her praise and encouragement.

And more recently, I discovered nearby Kigbeare, where the eloquent Brian Dickenson holds monthly sessions on wheel thrown pottery.

I often say that retirement is a bit like being at play-school and I feel so blessed that so many wonderful people have enriched my life in recent years”
